"It was a really tough night for him, but I thought he made a lot of really good pitches, manager Aaron Boone said after the game. A couple of mistakes they really put charges into to get back in the game."
"Boone told the Talkin' Yanks podcast on Tuesday that they will be calling up Yerry de los Santos to take Bird's spot in the bullpen. The righty posted a 3.28 ERA in 35.2 innings with New York last season as a multi-inning relief option."
"It is not the most headline-grabbing move. The Yankees have more dynamic arms brewing in the minors, whether that be Carlos Lagrange or Harrison Cohen, but de los Santos is a proven option that can contribute to a shorter bullpen now."
Jake Bird was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after giving up a three-run home run to Mike Trout in a loss to the Angels. Acquired from the Rockies, Bird had a poor performance with a 27.00 ERA in three appearances last season. Although he started this season with four scoreless outings, he faltered against the Marlins and Trout. Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Bird's struggles but noted he made good pitches. Yerry de los Santos will replace Bird in the bullpen, having shown promise in the minors.
