""One of the purposes of our organization is to bring people together to discuss what is urgent and important - and form strategic interest groups around some of those areas," says president France Córdova."

In 2025, federal funding cuts significantly impacted the US research ecosystem, leading to a surge in demand for support from philanthropic organizations. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, among others, stepped in to provide emergency funding for critical research projects. In 2024, philanthropic contributions accounted for approximately 21% of total funding for research institutions, with $27 billion provided. The Science Philanthropy Alliance has expanded from six to 45 members since its inception in 2014, emphasizing the growing importance of private funding in response to federal budget reductions.
