NAR talks DEI, hate speech and shrinking membership
Briefly

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) is proposing changes to its harassment policy, aiming to define harassment more clearly and align with NAR's code of conduct. A key feature allows Realtors to be encouraged but not mandated to adhere to the policy in all aspects of their lives, with disciplinary actions applicable only during professional engagement. These changes, prompted by local associations' complaints, seek to mitigate liability risks. Additionally, NAR's CEO addressed concerns regarding diversity initiatives and emphasized the necessity for informed discussions about organizational changes led by new legal counsel.
We were already aware of some issues that were percolating because of Standard of Practice 10-5 and...we began the conversation about...what do we need to do in order to help solve the problem.
All of the proposed changes are tied to efforts by Jonathan Waclawski, NAR's new general counsel, to de-risk the organization's portfolio.
But that could not be further from the truth. What we are continuing to do internally is make sure that we have the best-in-class staff to get us through today's transactions and tomorrow's transactions.
You should be able to come to NAR to understand what the de-risking of the portfolio is, not listening to chatter out there, but understanding exactly what we are doing.
