NIH Reinstates DEI Ban Hours After Rescinding It
Briefly

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) briefly rescinded a controversial directive that required grantees to certify they do not have diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. However, after the notice was posted and subsequently deleted within hours, it was confirmed by a spokesperson from the Department of Health and Human Services that the ban remains in effect. The NIH stated it is awaiting further federal guidance before making any permanent changes to its policies regarding DEI programs in grant funding.
The National Institutes of Health initially retracted a directive requiring grantees to affirm they do not have DEI programs, but reinstated it shortly after, confirming the ban remains.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed to STAT News that the directive banning diversity, equity, and inclusion programs among NIH grantees is still enforced.
