"They have a full board, they have a board chair, they have a board treasurer. The remaining member of management is the director of finance administration. And this whole conversation is about finance administration,"
CounterPulse is a long-running nonprofit art center located in the Tenderloin that purchased its building in 2023, securing a permanent home. The organization has a 35-year history of serving the city and sustaining audiences, artists, and community members. Financial pressures prompted union staff to offer unpaid furloughs and reduced hours to avoid layoffs, while management proposed laying off four union members. Remaining management primarily consists of a director of finance administration. Programming included 21 full productions in 2025, but the 2026 public calendar is mostly blank aside from a February youth-theatre production. The organization plans to support fiscally sponsored House Artists and is assessing capacity for spring events and a residency.
