San Jose nonprofits help families with food and groceries - San Jose Spotlight
""It's about showing up for families and telling families, 'We're here for you. You're valued,'""
""It trickles down to those children. There's a need right now and we'll just do what we can.""
""Kids get tired, lose concentration. There are also long-term impacts ... in brain development,""
Grail Family Services and Sacred Heart Community Service provided groceries and vouchers to families facing food insecurity, including many who rely on CalFresh/SNAP. Grail Family Services distributed $150 vouchers to 100 families at Arteaga's Food Center using a $10,000 grant from Destination: Home and $5,000 from Arteaga's Food Center, and aims to offer another voucher near Christmas. Grail Family Services delivers child care, preschool, support groups, parent education and professional development while partnering with schools to promote childhood well-being. A SNAP freeze increased family stress and left children coming in hungry, which can reduce concentration and affect long-term brain development. CalFresh provides about $25.5 million monthly to roughly 130,000 Santa Clara County residents.
