The Vera Institute of Justice experienced the abrupt cancellation of five federal grants by the Department of Justice, totaling around $5 million. These funds supported important initiatives including prison condition improvements and training for law enforcement in aiding deaf domestic violence survivors. Vice President Insha Rahman expressed concern that Vera’s funding loss could set a precedent for other organizations opposing the current administration. Attorney General Pam Bondi's actions reflect a significant shift in DOJ priorities under President Trump's influence, emphasizing governmental efficiency while targeting voices critical of the administration.
It is just an opening salvo. Vera might be the first organization to lose its federal funding, but I am certain we will not be the last in the criminal justice field.
It leads us to believe that the only reason our funding was cut is that we have been singularly vocal in our opposition to this administration's actions.
