The upcoming interim release of Ubuntu will adopt Wayland as the sole display protocol for its GNOME variant, mirroring the change in Fedora 43. This decision aligns with GNOME's removal of the X11 session. Resistance is anticipated among users, especially with future integration of stronger systemd dependencies making it more challenging for GNOME to run on non-Linux systems. While the GNOME variant will be exclusive to Wayland, Ubuntu’s multiple other flavors will continue to support X11, likely influencing user choice toward this mainstream desktop environment.
Like any other distro with GNOME 49, the next interim release of Ubuntu will be Wayland-only - at least in its GNOME variant.
Upstream, because GNOME 49 will remove the X11 session, and parallel, because the corresponding release of Red Hat's free community distro, Fedora 43, will also be Wayland-only.
The new change only applies to the GNOME variants of Ubuntu and Fedora. Both distros offer multiple other desktop environments.
It's significant, though, because GNOME is the default desktop edition of Ubuntu, just as it is in Fedora Workstation.
