A young elephant seal was spotted wandering through Gordon's Bay, South Africa, surprising local residents and igniting a community rescue effort. Weighing around two tons, the seal moved through suburbs, causing concern among animal welfare officials who feared he would become too far from the ocean and at risk of dehydration. Local police and animal welfare teams sedated the seal and transported him safely back to a nearby bay, where he was recorded heading toward the ocean once more, much to the delight of the community.
"This is unreal. Hi, bro, how did you get here?" one woman asked.
Animal welfare officials worried he was too far from the ocean to find his way back and might become exhausted and dehydrated.
A team of marine wildlife specialists and a city veterinarian sedated the seal and guided him into an animal transport trailer to be returned to his natural habitat at a nearby bay.
The local Cape of Good Hope SPCA later posted a video on social media of the seal making his way down a beach and toward the ocean.
