A recent study has uncovered alarming levels of formaldehydeâa known carcinogenâin various personal care products, including shampoos, lotions, and eyelash glue. Boston University researchers focused on Black and Latina women who logged their product usage and found that over half used products containing formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. This exposure has serious implications for health, particularly increasing cancer risks. Notably, DMDM hydantoin emerged as the most prevalent preservative found in both skincare and hair products. Lead author Dr. Robin Dodson cautioned that more harmful chemicals might exist beyond those studied.
A new study revealed that many personal care products contain formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, heightening health risks for frequent users.
The study analyzed product usage among Black and Latina women, finding 53% used items with formaldehyde releasers, raising cancer risk.
Lead author Dr. Robin Dodson emphasized the widespread exposure: 'These chemicals are in products we use all the time, all over our bodies.'
The most common formaldehyde-releasing preservative, DMDM hydantoin, was found in nearly half of skincare and most hair products in the study.
