Colossal squid is seen live in the deep sea for the first time
Briefly

For the first time, scientists have captured live footage of a colossal squid in its natural environment, using the Schmidt Ocean Institute's remotely operated vehicle. The vibrant video reveals a juvenile specimen measuring 11 inches and showcases its elegant, transparent body and pink tentacles. This sighting marks a significant milestone given that colossal squids have only been seen post-mortem until now. The expedition crew initially did not realize the significance of the encounter, highlighting the surprise and rarity of this event as it occurred 100 years after the species was first documented.
The squid is a teenager and none have ever been filmed alive before in their natural habitat, juvenile or adult. We probably caught this teenager unawares.
At the time, not being a squid expert and regrettably having none on board the ship, we did not realise that we had seen a colossal squid.
