Marshmallow Laser Feast has launched 'Of the Oak', an immersive installation at Kew Gardens featuring a six-meter-tall video sculpture of a Lucombe oak. Utilizing advanced techniques such as LiDAR scans and CT imaging, this digital representation unveils not only the tree's appearance but also its root systems, ecosystems, and seasonal changes. Collaborating with botanists, MLF's installation combines visual and auditory elements to create an engaging experience, showcasing the intricate relationship between the oak and its environment, ultimately redefining how we perceive trees and nature.
MLF has crafted a "digital double" of the tree using an arsenal of advanced tools and research methodologies.
The resulting visualization not only reflects the tree's external form, but dives into its subterranean root networks, the creatures it supports, and the rhythms it follows from season to season.
Thousands of high-resolution images were stitched together to build its form, while LiDAR mapping gave dimension to its branches.
Layered on top are soundscapes recorded over 24-hour periods, allowing visitors to experience the oak's world at every hour.
