Naturally ornate RNA-only complexes revealed by cryo-EM
Briefly

This study presents groundbreaking 3D structures of three large ornamental bacterial RNAs, obtained through cryogenic electron microscopy, achieving resolutions between 2.9-3.1 A. Notably, these RNAs—GOLLD, ROOL, and OLE—demonstrate the ability to form stable homo-oligomeric complexes independently from proteins, showcasing their biological relevance. OLE RNA exhibits a unique dimeric complex structure, while GOLLD and ROOL create large, RNA-only nanocages. The findings underscore the significance of intermolecular interactions and evolutionary conservation, supporting the functional roles of these complex RNA structures in biology.
The study reveals the first three-dimensional structures of large ornate bacterial RNAs, highlighting their unique ability to form complex multimeric structures without protein involvement.
Using cryogenic electron microscopy, the research illustrates how distinct large RNAs like GOLLD and ROOL produce RNA-only nanocages, emphasizing their biological significance.
