A scud cloud was mistaken for a tornado by locals in Thurmont, Maryland, causing panic as it was observed rolling through the area. Meteorologist Justin Berk documented the event, which prompted viewers to express their fears online. Despite its tornado-like appearance, local experts clarified that scud clouds are low-lying, non-threatening fog banks that form beneath storm clouds. Unlike tornadoes, scud clouds do not rotate and pose no danger, showcasing the common misinterpretation of unusual weather phenomena by the public.
'Using the word "vacuum" isn't a good way to describe scud clouds, because there's really no sucking going on,' said Cowboy State Daily meteorologist Don Day.
'When you get into a thunderstorm situation, there's a lot going on at the base of those clouds.'
