Scientists worry about free speech rights under the Trump administration
Briefly

Tara McKay, at Vanderbilt University, faced the termination of her NIH-funded LGBTQ+ research project due to its focus on transgender issues. The funding cut is part of over 1,000 grants canceled by the Department of Health and Human Services for not aligning with the Trump administration's priorities. McKay highlights the emotional impact of this decision, expressing concern for the scientific community and marginalized groups. Her work addresses significant health disparities affecting LGBTQ+ individuals, and she fears that the current political climate may stifle academic freedom and crucial research.

Research programs based on gender identity are often unscientific, have little identifiable return on investment, and do nothing to enhance the health of many Americans.
