A Town-Gown Partnership Focused on Climate Resilience
""You can only be as sustainable as the community where you are. Agnes Scott could have its own resilience plan, but we're not insulated. We have these connections to Decatur, metro Atlanta and our broader region.""
""The resilience commitment includes a provision that requires colleges to work with local governments to assess the community's climate vulnerabilities and use that information to develop a climate action plan that engages all students in and out of the classroom.""
Agnes Scott College has placed 36 heat sensors in Decatur, Georgia, to analyze extreme heat risks as part of a joint Climate Resilience Plan with the city. This initiative showcases the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and local communities in tackling climate change. The college has a long-standing commitment to sustainability, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2037. Since 2015, it has worked with local governments to assess climate vulnerabilities and engage students in climate action planning.
