'I run a theatre group for over 65s called The Elders - we're creating work with true artistic value'
Briefly

Andrea Scott, director of The Elders, initiated a community project with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in 2018, focusing on engaging older audiences at the Mill Theatre in Dundrum. Through outreach efforts recommended by theatre manager Kate Canning, the project aimed to harness the supportive nature of the senior population, paving the way for collaboration with professional artists and the creation of original works. This initiative emphasized the importance of involving older demographics in the arts, fostering both creativity and community bonds.
In 2018, I applied to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for a commission to do a community project that ultimately led to the formation of The Elders.
The Mill Theatre was instrumental in launching the project; the suggestion to reach out to older audiences highlighted their strong connection to community performance.
The Elders is not just a performance group but a collaborative community, bringing together older individuals with professional artists for a unique creative experience.
Engaging the older demographic in the arts not only enriches their lives but also strengthens community ties and celebrates their contributions to culture.
