SETU bestows special award on former President of Ireland Michael D Higgins
South East Technological University (SETU) awarded the 2026 Michael Cooley Award to former President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins. The award recognized exemplary contributions to enhancing access to, and promoting deeper understanding of, the scholarly work and enduring legacy of Professor Mike Cooley. Higgins accepted the accolade at SETU’s Cork Road Campus in Waterford on Tuesday, May 26, accompanied by his wife Sabina, in the presence of special guests and political representatives. The ceremony celebrated Cooley’s legacy as an engineer, philosopher, shop steward, trade unionist, and author. Cooley’s ideas continue to influence global thinking on technology, artificial intelligence, labour, sustainability, and the future of work. Higgins emphasized Cooley’s vision of harmony among technology, work, creativity, and human dignity, and said the ideas remain essential amid artificial intelligence, ecological transition, and the future of work.
