The U.S. Department of Justice has successfully disrupted the DanaBot malware infrastructure and filed charges against 16 individuals involved with it, claiming the malware infected over 300,000 computers globally, causing $50 million in damages. Key figures, Stepanov and Kalinkin, remain at large. The indictment reveals tragic flaws in the cybercrime effort, as several defendants accidentally infected their own systems with the malware, inadvertently exposing their identities and furthering the investigation.
In some cases, such self-infections appeared to be deliberately done in order to test, analyze, or improve the malware.
The inadvertent infections often resulted in sensitive and compromising data being stolen from the actor's computer by the malware.
