Complaints of elder abuse in Ireland have surged to an alarming 7,500, indicating a pressing demand for comprehensive adult safeguarding legislation that has yet to be enacted. The rise in cases may be linked to the ongoing housing crisis, which forces many adults to live with their elderly parents, possibly escalating circumstances for abuse. Alone CEO Sean Moynihan emphasized the role of inadequate housing in heightening vulnerability among older adults, as precarious living conditions can lead to increased risk of neglect and exploitation.
"The current housing crisis, which is resulting in adults living at home with their older parents for longer, can create the conditions for elder abuse to occur," Mr Moynihan said.
"Inadequate housing often exacerbates the risk of abuse and neglect among older people, leaving them exposed to precarious living conditions and vulnerable to exploitation," said Alone CEO Sean Moynihan.
