Settling in Mormanno, Calabria, proved challenging, lacking the support and community they cherished in Ohio. While the town offered affordability and safety, isolation and the struggle to teach their children both English and Italian added complexity to their experience. Despite having lived there for over a decade and becoming fluent in Italian, the author feels disconnected from their previous life and support system.
Raising kids without that support system is hard, especially in a foreign country where so much feels unfamiliar to me.
On paper, it looked like everything we needed. And yet, over a decade and three more kids later, I still don't love living in a small town in Southern Italy.
