A significant number of parents continue to consume alcohol, even as overall US drinking rates decline. Between 2015 and 2019, over 97 million children lived with a parent who drank, and 4.7 percent lived with a parent diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder. In particular, 43.5 percent of parents with children under 14 were deemed risky drinkers. Parents often use alcohol and substances for stress relief and to fit into social settings, where drinking is prevalent at various community events and gatherings involving children.
"It's been a while since I've socialized with people who drink or smoke pot, but that's in large part because the parents I know who aren't in recovery all drink and smoke, and it's completely accepted, even when excessive."
"Parents drink, drug, and party a lot where I live. Alcohol and marijuana (edibles mostly) are a big part of the social scene in my town and were a part of most adults-only events and ones where kids were present, including birthday parties, beach days, school events, holiday parties, and neighborhood events."
"All of the parents at my son's school drink, and I am sure many use edible marijuana. There are cliques of kids based on the fact that their parents party together."
"It's the start of T-Ball season again, and parents will bring alcohol to drink in their tumblers to sports practice or games; when we go to birthday parties for children, the parents drink alcohol, which seemed bizarre to me at first, but I think it's quite common."
