Starting June 1st, 2026, the cardboard Metro tickets will no longer be valid for Paris' public transport network, as confirmed by the transport operator. Although tickets can be converted to an 'Easy' transport pass until September 2026, the phase-out has been ongoing since 2018. Several stations have stopped selling paper tickets, and various alternatives such as passes and digital tickets have been encouraged. These cardboard tickets have existed since 1973 in their current form and will be fully discontinued, signifying a shift towards digitization in transport.
The final death knell for the tickets, which measure 6.5cm x 3cm and have existed in the current form with a magnetic strip since 1973, will be confirmed on Thursday.
A historic ticket for getting around, the ticket carton is becoming increasingly obsolete with the digitisation of transport tickets, which facilitates ticket storage and reduces cardboard waste.
