Thirty cats were discovered living in appalling conditions near a Bethpage State Park trail, where a homeless man had been hoarding them. The rescuers found the cats in filthy cages, some with holes allowing them to escape into traffic. The rescuer described the situation as one of the worst he had encountered. The cats had minimal food and water and were exposed to harsh weather. Thomas McDermott, the alleged hoarder, is the subject of a criminal investigation after violating a protective order from his mother. Despite the evidence, he claimed to care for the animals.
I've handled pretty bad situations, but this was one of the worst, animal rescuer John Debacker stated, highlighting the extreme neglect the cats faced in their cages.
It's very sad... we could tell right away he was hoarding these cats, Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly remarked, reflects on the serious nature of the situation.
