Lifeguards rescue dog swept out to sea by rip current off California coast
""Please let us find this dog," Alldredge said."
""We got closer and closer, and then we realized it was her and we were pretty excited," he said."
""And we kind of just held our breath, and they were like, and the dog is alive," she said. "And we kind of just started crying right away.""
Sadie, a black Labrador-mix, slipped away from the home where her owners were staying during a football game and was swept into a rip current near the Ocean Beach jetty. Surfers alerted lifeguards after seeing a dog in the channel, and the U.S. Coast Guard joined the search. Lifeguards Garrett Smerdon and Jack Alldredge searched on personal watercraft for more than an hour and nearly were called off before spotting Sadie about a half-mile offshore. Rescuers transferred her to a surf boat, brought her to shore, and reunited her with her owners. Sadie suffered badly damaged paws and nails from trying to climb onto the jetty.
