How Alfie Whiteman - pro footballer turned photographer and director - shows the turbulence of change through his vulnerable work
A former Tottenham goalkeeper opened a first solo exhibition titled “A Loan,” featuring self-portraits taken in 2021 during a loan spell with Degerfors in rural Sweden. The work reflects feeling trapped at a crossroads with no clear next step. He grew up in a creative household with a musician and graphic designer father and a textile design mother, and he was exposed to galleries, music, and films early. While training as a teenager, he gravitated toward drawing and taught himself photography. He also shadowed a director and took on runner work in film production. Knowing football would be short, he planned for life after playing through creative expression.
"It hangs a series of self portraits Alfie took in 2021 while he was on loan to the Swedish team Degerfors and living in the country's rural woodlands. It embodies a state many will know well - feeling like your life is trapped at a many-pronged crossroads, and you've no clue which path to take next."
