The project began as a photographic exploration capturing Benin's energy through its landscapes and people. Victor transitioned from wide shots to intimate portraits, focusing on genuine encounters. He found that some of the most powerful images arose from chance meetings and a relaxed, open approach. One standout image features a smiling woman with two children, encapsulating themes of resilience and grace. The project, titled Here, In Light, invites viewers to appreciate a slower pace and evokes feelings of warmth and connection to Benin.
An image that stands out to the photographer is from his encounter with a young woman carrying two of her children - one on her shoulder and the other tied to her back, "all while wearing the biggest, most radiant smile". He describes this moment as deeply human and quietly heroic, capturing the resilience, care, and strength enveloping the series.
Victor shares that "what I learned is that the most powerful images sometimes come when you're not trying too hard, when you're simply open". This approach fostered meaningful interactions and transformed his photographic exploration into a personal experience.
The project's title Here, In Light is fitting not only for the focus on light in each study but also as a representation of feeling welcomed and embraced in a foreign place. Victor aspires for the work to evoke warmth, reverence, and recognition.
