Park golf, developed in Japan in the 1980s, is gaining traction in the United States. A newly opened park golf course at Great Gorge Golf Club in New Jersey highlights this trend. Players use a modified mallet-like club to play with larger balls, resulting in a quick game that can be completed in about an hour. Unlike traditional golf, park golf offers a fun, relaxed experience without lengthy ball searches or complicated rules. There are currently a few operational courses in the U.S., with more expected to emerge as interest grows.
"[T]here was a lingering difference that came after each swing on a park course: I was having fun. There were no ten-minute searches for a five-dollar ball, no petty rules to look up in a book."
"Park golf, created in 1983 by Atsushi Maehara, is a big deal in Japan; according to the International Park Golf Association of America, there are 1,300 courses to be found across the country."
