Building Cost-Effective Podcast Transcription Infrastructure
Briefly

Building Podscan presented unique challenges unlike previous software businesses. The key issue was that resource needs would depend on the uncontrollable daily influx of new podcast episodes. A focus was established on transcribing all podcasts while managing the overwhelming volume of new shows. The project began with limited prototypes that utilized the Podcast Index, which provided essential data for trending and new episodes. Efforts were made to transform an expensive transcription process into an affordable one, leveraging technological advancements and weighing necessary trade-offs throughout the journey.
The prototype for Podscan was built with a keen awareness of the different business challenges presented by the need to manage the volume of new podcast episodes globally.
Focus was directed towards what could be controlled: transcribing every single podcast, despite the staggering number of new shows released daily.
The transition from a costly transcription process to a more affordable workflow involved careful consideration of trade-offs and advancements in technology.
Utilizing the Podcast Index allowed the initial prototype to access data on trending and newly released episodes, enhancing the transcription process.
