""Every time we've gone, when we come back home, they are glowing for a while. They are more bought into what we are doing. They are more inspired to work harder. They are super excited to play.""
""We provide an opportunity for students, and the schools don't have to sell 10,000 candy bars to come. It impacts students musically, of course ... but by coming to the festival for four days, they have lunch together; they stay in the motels together; they go to the beach; they have a bonfire; they perform together. They meet friends from other schools. They come as individuals, and they leave as a team.""
The Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival, now in its 10th season, provides a unique opportunity for students from six Oregon schools to learn from professional musicians. The festival fosters teamwork and camaraderie among students, who participate in various activities together. Music teacher Corey Tamondong notes that students return inspired and more committed to their music. The festival is funded by grants, including a recent $24,000 grant from the Oregon Cultural Trust, and aims to expand to Astoria this year.
