Good Morning, News: Trump's SOTU Flop, a NYC Snowball Fight Riles Cops, and Portland Will Pay You to Rent Out Part of Your Home
"Homeowners with extra rooms in their houses can rent them out to folks in need of affordable housing, while getting paid up to $1,000 a month ($200 a week) by the city to cover a tenant's rent and utilities. While Portlanders have been renting out portions of their homes for several decades, the new model has robust city involvement, as a way to add affordable housing stock without any new production."
"Portland Police officers got a bit of a lucky break Tuesday night, when they were able to seize drugs and multiple guns from a guy's vehicle, simply because he was passed out. According to Portland Police Bureau, officers were called to check on a man who was slumped over in his car after crashing into a mailbox. They couldn't get him to wake up, so officers broke a window in his vehicle and found three handguns, two unregistered short-barreled AR-15-style rifles, ammunition, and drugs."
Portland's morning news briefing covers local developments and weather. February is nearing its end with spring arriving in less than three weeks. The forecast shows partly sunny conditions with a high of 50 degrees and overnight low of 34 degrees. The city announced a new Home Share pilot program enabling homeowners to rent extra rooms to people needing affordable housing while receiving city payments up to $1,000 monthly to cover rent and utilities. This model, already implemented in California and Tennessee, expands affordable housing without new construction. Additionally, Portland Police seized three handguns, two unregistered AR-15-style rifles, ammunition, and drugs from a 34-year-old felon found unconscious in a crashed vehicle.
