How a Jog and a Jump in the Willamette River Became a Summer Ritual
Briefly

A spontaneous decision to swim in the Willamette River during a run in August 2016 shifted perceptions of the river. Initially viewed as a barrier, swimming became a celebrated ritual. Over time, this activity turned into a cherished summer tradition, combining jogging with refreshing swims. The experience highlighted a thrilling contrast to urban living, marking a delightful escape and a personal evolution, despite initial fears about the potential consequences of swimming in the river.
‘What if we just went for a swim?’ Such a simple question, and yet an authentic head-spinner. No one I knew swam in the downtown Willamette.
Realizing that I wouldn't get a ticket for swimming changed my life. A dip in the river has been one of my favorite summer rituals for nine years.
