Portland Opera's recent production of Verdi's Falstaff, set in a 1980s golf club, received an enthusiastic response during its opening night on May 10. Baritone Darren Drone shone in the title role, supported by smart stage direction by David Radamés Toro. The opera, based on Shakespeare, humorously explores themes of love, jealousy, and farce through the character of Falstaff, a knight pursuing two married women. Engaging visual projections set the club atmosphere, although a few scenes, particularly in the clubhouse sauna, required adjustments for clarity and coherence.
"The projections worked very well to set the scenes, but the best visual of all was of Falstaff, dunked in the swimming pool while dressed in his garish finest and making his way to the surface."
"Right from the opening of the opera, imagery of old money country clubs was projected on columns of large scrims, which extended from the fly down to the stage floor."
