Portland is confronting tough decisions regarding compliance with federal anti-DEI mandates imposed by the Trump Administration. City Administrator Michael Jordan indicated the city risks losing hundreds of millions in federal funds if it does not adhere to these mandates. Executive orders under President Trump have altered legal landscapes, challenging cities to eliminate programs aimed at supporting oppressed communities. Specifically, the executive orders target DEI initiatives, which include environmental justice programs. Portland is aiming to secure new federal grants but must certify compliance with these orders first.
"Like local governments across the United States, Portland is facing challenging decisions about how to respond to the Trump Administration's demands that cities eliminate some policies and programs designed to help Portlanders who are people of color, women, and other oppressed groups overcome hundreds of years of systemic discrimination," Jordan stated in a news release Wednesday.
Jordan said the city is poised to accept several new federal grants, but it won't actually receive the funds unless it certifies compliance with recent executive orders.
