After a decade since Portland's Vision Zero resolution, the city is still struggling to achieve its goals of eliminating traffic deaths. In 2024, 58 fatalities were reported, a decrease from the previous year's high of 69, yet still a concerning trend compared to the initial years post-adoption. Councilor Tiffany Koyama Lane is set to introduce a resolution to reaffirm commitment to Vision Zero, including the formation of a task force to foster collaboration among city agencies and advocacy groups, aiming to confront continuing traffic violence head-on and take substantive measures for safety.
Koyama Lane states, "I know that we can and have to make different choices. We're a new City Council. I think it's really important that we come together and reaffirm the city's vows to Vision Zero, and make traffic safety a real priority."
Despite the initial optimism surrounding the Vision Zero resolution adopted in 2015, Portland is now further from its traffic safety goals, having recorded 58 fatalities in 2024.
Councilor Tiffany Koyama Lane labels the ongoing traffic deaths not just as tragedies but as significant policy failures that need urgent attention from the City Council.
Koyama Lane's plan to establish a Vision Zero task force aims to enhance collaboration among city bureaus and community advocates, reinstating vital oversight of traffic safety initiatives.
