Data breach at collections vendor could affect some Bristol, Tennessee accounts
Briefly

A breach at Nationwide Recovery Services has compromised sensitive personal data of approximately 6,000 Bristol, Tennessee residents, resulting in the city notifying affected individuals and offering identity protection. The breach occurred in July 2024 but was disclosed to the city only in February 2025. Similar breaches affected Chattanooga, which sent 836 notifications. Both cities are now reconsidering their contracts with Nationwide due to the incident, highlighting the consequences of relying on third-party vendors for sensitive data handling.
During a City Council work session Tuesday evening, officials said approximately 6,000 letters will be sent to people notifying them of the breach and offering complimentary identity protection services.
Nationwide informed the city of the breach in February, Holl said in an April 4 release. In the February notice, Nationwide representatives said that they had first informed the city of a problem with the data's security in July.
