A new sextortion scam is circulating where individuals receive threatening emails claiming to have recorded them in compromising situations via hacked devices. The scams often utilize technical details, including references to Pegasus spyware and personal passwords. Recipients are coerced into paying a ransom, typically around $1,450 in cryptocurrency, under the threat that incriminating videos will be shared with their contacts. The alarming nature of the messages aims to instill fear and prompt quick compliance from victims.
The email currently doing the rounds is a sextortion scam. It is a phishing attack whereby people are coerced to hand over money by being told they risk having incriminating videos of themselves shared.
The scammer claims to have installed Pegasus spyware, threatening to share videos of the individual watching pornography or engaging in private acts with their contacts.
In a typical message, the phisher demands a ransom payment, threatening life-destroying consequences if the victim does not comply within 48 hours.
The scam is made more credible by including technical details and personal information like the victim's password, making it appear legitimate.
