The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has opted not to conduct further investigations into the British Library's 2023 ransomware attack due to current resource limitations. The library received commendations for its transparent communication and proactive measures following the breach, including the publication of a comprehensive cyber incident review in March 2024. This review detailed the vulnerabilities that led to the attack and highlighted lessons learned, serving as a guide for other organizations. The ICO appreciated the British Library's approach to responsibly disclosing the incident and enhancing its security protocols.
Having carefully considered this particular case, the Information Commissioner decided that, due to our current priorities, further investigation would not be the most effective use of our resources.
Following the incident, the British Library published a cyber incident review in March 2024, which provided an overview of the cyber-attack and key lessons learnt to help other organisations that may experience similar incidents.
