The CA/Browser Forum has voted to significantly shorten the lifespan of SSL/TLS certificates from one year to 47 days, with changes being implemented gradually until March 2029. This decision aims to enhance web security by encouraging the use of automation for certificate management. However, the move has raised concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest, as it could lead to increased revenue for certification authorities. While the vote passed without any dissenting votes, five members abstained, indicating divided opinions within the forum.
This is fully what we were expecting. But I do question the motives of the group. They are doing this under the auspices of reducing risk, but I question if that is the real reason.
Although the group voted overwhelmingly to approve the change, with zero "No" votes, not every member agreed with the decision; five members abstained.
