Synology has announced that its upcoming Plus tier devices, beginning with the 2025 series, will mandate the use of Synology-branded hard drives for optimal performance. This decision stems from internal testing indicating that approved drives significantly reduce potential failures and compatibility issues. While Synology plans to develop a compatibility framework for third-party drives, these will need to undergo validation. Users can also suggest drives for testing, thus maintaining the integrity of their NAS systems while allowing for some flexibility in drive options.
Without a Synology-branded or approved drive in a device that requires it, NAS devices could fail to create storage pools and lose volume-wide deduplication.
Extensive internal testing has shown that drives that follow a rigorous validation process when paired with Synology systems are at less risk of drive failure.
