Texas is moving towards implementing stringent regulations on minors' social media use. The proposed House Bill 186 aims to ban minors from creating accounts without parental consent and allows parents to request account deletions. This legislation has passed the House with broad bipartisan support and is anticipated to pass the Senate by April 2026. With Texas's law being more comprehensive compared to similar regulations in other states, it signifies a growing concern for online safety among parents and legislators alike.
Currently, only Florida has a ban on social media, but it only applies to children under 14, although they are seeking to expand it to 16.
Like so many parents across our state, I've watched my children grow up in a world that feels less and less safe, not because of where they go physically, but because of where they go online.
