"If you see an accident happen, or some kind of genuine emergency, don't just take out your phone to record it. Even if you're not medically trained, you can still use said phone to call for emergency assistance, or do your best to reassure the casualty (assuming they're conscious)."
"Choking is silent! People who are choking on something that is completely occluding their airway cannot cough, talk, or shout for help. They turn bright red, then blue, and then die. Most people just need a good, sharp smack between the shoulder blades - google 'back slaps for choking.' You need to absolutely whack them! If five of those don't work, you can move to abdominal thrusts (Heimlich Maneuver). These cause more damage, so try not to if you can avoid them."
"Put your dog away when first responders are around. Many dogs are protective of their people, not just big dogs or so-called 'bully-breeds.' Due to my work, I've become known for being able to handle most any dog (not true!). I've been asked on numerous occasions to respond to an emergency where the dog will not permit anyone to enter their home. The dog may be a 90-pound German Shepherd or an 8-pound Yorkie...it doesn't matter. No one wants to get bitten, and too often, the dog is so upset that it snaps at anyone. In addition, as the police/firefighters/EMTs work, the dog can get loose and run away or be hit by a car."
Prioritize immediate assistance over capturing footage at an incident. Use a phone to call emergency services and, if the casualty is conscious, offer reassurance. Recognize that choking can be silent; a completely occluded airway prevents coughing, talking, or shouting and can rapidly progress from red to blue and death. Deliver forceful back slaps and, if necessary, abdominal thrusts, and learn formal techniques for clearing airway blockages, especially for children and vulnerable adults. Secure household dogs before responders arrive to prevent bites, escapes, or interference with care. Avoid co-sleeping with infants; place them flat on their back with ample space when comforting.
