The CDC's advisory committee on immunization practices is convening publicly to discuss vaccine policies for the first time under Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s leadership. Initially postponed, the two-day meeting is crucial for shaping public access to and insurance coverage for vaccines. Claire Hannan, the Association of Immunization Managers executive director, expressed relief at the meeting's occurrence, emphasizing the need for transparent data review. While discussing various vaccines, including HPV and COVID, the committee's agenda has been modified, omitting an anticipated flu vaccine vote, which has raised questions about the scheduling.
"I'm reassured and very glad to see that it's happening," says Claire Hannan, executive director of the Association of Immunization Managers. "It's important to have this ongoing review of data and science, looking at the evidence that goes into the vaccine schedule in an open forum."
When asked about the change, HHS spokesperson Emily Hilliard responded on behalf of CDC: "ACIP agenda items are always subject to change depending on what the working groups have ready for consideration." She further clarified: "This was not the annual vote for the routine use of the influenza vaccine for the upcoming season."
