The CDC has decided to abandon a plan to provide ventilation assessments in Texas schools to combat the ongoing measles outbreak, citing potential layoffs among staff. Initially, the agency planned to extend its services, previously offered to hospitals, to schools for better evaluation of air filtration systems and their role in virus spread. Experts found significant gaps in hospital ventilation that worsened the outbreak. However, despite understanding the importance of these assessments, staff cuts hindered the CDC's ability to assist schools in managing the health crisis effectively.
In one example, an isolation room at a hospital was found to have been pressurized wrongly, with air flowing out of the room with the measles patient, Neu said.
Being on the ground allows us to actually look at the filters that are in place, look at the HVAC systems, how they're set up, how they're being used, how they're being monitored.
