Flash floods in north-west Pakistan have resulted from a massive cloudburst, with at least 157 confirmed dead. In Buner district, 78 bodies were recovered, followed by an additional 79 from collapsed structures. The overall death toll in Pakistan since June 26 has reached 556. A helicopter crash during relief efforts resulted in the deaths of five individuals. Climate change is contributing to an increase in the frequency of such intense rain events, exacerbated by unplanned development in vulnerable mountain areas.
A massive cloudburst has triggered flash floods in north-west Pakistan, killing at least 157 people. The death toll may rise as we are still looking for dozens of missing people.
Experts say these intense downpours have become more frequent in recent years, partly owing to the climate crisis, and that the damage caused has also increased because of unplanned development in mountain regions.
Dozens were injured as the deluge destroyed homes in villages in Buner, where authorities declared a state of emergency. An aerial image shows Buner district submerged in flood water after flash floods.
