Florida is set to become the second U.S. state to ban fluoridation of public water supplies, reversing decades of public health policy. Governor Ron DeSantis, who plans to sign Senate Bill 700, emphasizes individual choice over mass medication, arguing there are alternative ways for people to obtain fluoride. The legislation has faced significant backlash from public health experts who warn it could lead to increased dental disease. The move reflects DeSantis' broader political stance against health mandates, echoing his COVID management approach and branding Florida as a 'Free State.'
"It's forced medication when they're jamming fluoride. And they did it because if you have fluoride, it'll help with dental. And I'm not saying that's not true, but we have other ways where people can get access to fluoride."
"You're going to increase the amount of dental disease because of the lack of fluoride in the water," said Dr. Bruce Tandy, of Delray Beach, who retired after 40 years.
