Florida's governor plans to ask the state legislature to repeal a statute requiring children to receive vaccines for polio, diphtheria, measles and mumps before entering school. If enacted, Florida would become the first state to eliminate all vaccine mandates for children and adults. Additional vaccines such as chickenpox, hepatitis B and strep are mandated by the state health department; the Surgeon General said the department will issue rules to repeal those requirements. The Surgeon General criticized vaccine mandates and has opposed mRNA COVID vaccines. Public health and child health professionals warned of increased disease risk, funding and access problems.
