How Helsinki cut traffic deaths to zero with smart planning DW 08/19/2025
Briefly

Helsinki, Finland, has achieved zero traffic fatalities over the last year, making it one of the largest cities to reach this milestone. The city recorded only four traffic fatalities in 2024, translating to 0.59 per 100,000 inhabitants, significantly lower than other European capitals such as Berlin and London. Key factors in this achievement include a reduced speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour on many streets, especially around schools. The city's goal is to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2050, aligning with the EU's "Vision Zero" program.
"I think it is one of the key measures. Only reducing speed limits is not a sufficient measure, but it is still important," Utriainen told DW.
Helsinki recorded four traffic fatalities in 2024, 0.59 per 100,000 inhabitants, until early July. By comparison, Berlin recorded 1.45 per 100,000 and London 110.
