"In my practice alone, we've hospitalized several kids over the past few weeks, and it's just starting, so we're really worried about what's to come,"
"The rates of hospitalization or death for people who have been vaccinated are dramatically less than those who are unvaccinated,"
"In the past, like about 80 to 90% of pediatric deaths of influenza have been with kids who have not been vaccinated."
"like they were hit by a truck"
Bay Area influenza activity is the second highest in California, with 18% of respiratory tests returning positive and Central California at 21%. Nationwide flu activity surged after the holidays, with 45 states reporting high or very high activity and outpatient visits for flu-like illness at a five-year peak. Influenza A is dominant, including a mutated A(H3N2) subclade K labeled the "super flu." Common symptoms include fever, cough and body aches, and pediatric hospitalizations have already occurred. Vaccination is recommended even late in the season because it reduces severity, hospitalizations and deaths.
