A memorial featuring 84 white crosses was erected along Adobe Road in Petaluma to honor individuals lost to fentanyl poisoning. Community members, including Micah Sawyer, who lost his son, aim to raise awareness about the drug's dangers. Petaluma restaurant owner Kimberly Saxelby, affected personally by these tragedies, highlights the need for education on fentanyl's risks. A recent 5K run organized by students at Santa Rosa High School also focused on fentanyl awareness, remembering classmate Gia Walsh, who died from an overdose.
"It just brings back memories of all the loss and pain and suffering all these families go through," said Micah Sawyer, reflecting on the memorial's impact.
Eighty-four white crosses adorn this fence line, a roadside memorial to 84 lives lost to fentanyl poisoning, including Sawyer's son, Micah Jr.
Kimberly Saxelby expressed, "I have three personal girlfriends who have lost their children to fentanyl. It's heartbreaking," highlighting the local ties to this epidemic.
"Showing people, educating people that this drug is real. This drug is killing people," Saxelby emphasized, underscoring the need for awareness.
